Water Walk 2013
Dear Friends of Rotary,
Did you know that over one billion people in the world do not have access to pure water? How sad it is that over two million children are dying every year due to water borne diseases. That means there is one child who dies somewhere in the world every 15 seconds! How fortunate we are to have some of the best drinking water in the world, right here, and most of us take it for granted.
These staggering numbers inspired the Glens Falls Rotary, along with 74 other clubs, 4 districts, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, and Pure Water for the World, to combine funds and efforts to provide thousands of bio-sand filters to serve 15,000 people with clean drinking water in Choluteca, Honduras. Children there were dying by the thousands from contaminated water. Through the efforts of Pure Water for the World expediting and organizing these projects, we are improving the quality of life for thousands of Hondurans that do not have access to clean drinking water. In 2008 we partnered with the Glens Falls Medical Mission to launch a clean water program for families with children in Guatemala.
We also are helping in Haiti. Thousands of children are dying there too. Our project had its beginning eight years ago and certainly a lot more has to be done, but over 20,000 children are now enjoying the benefits of drinking clean water in this poor third world country as well.
Once again this year the Rotary Club of Glens Falls is focusing on Haiti. Since the devastating earthquake that hit the country in January 2011, we have re-doubled our efforts to help the children and families by providing bio-sand water filters in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding towns and villages. We will again team up with Pure Water for the World and the money raised in Glens Falls for these filters will provide pure drinking and household water to thousands of people and save countless lives in poorer areas of this country in the Carribean.
Water-borne illness is one of the top killers in underdeveloped nations and can be stopped with the use of bio-sand filters. Further details are available on the club's website www.glensfallsrotary.org or by visiting www.purewaterfortheworld.org .
This will be our 6th year working with Pure Water for the World, The Rotary Foundation and Rotary International to raise the funds necessary to continue this vital work. So please join us on May 4th 2013 for our 8th annual Pure Water Walk , in Crandall Park, Glens Falls, NY. Rain or shine, come help us raise funds for this very worthy humanitarian effort.
It's going to be a big party, no rain dates here (after all, it's all about water)! We are registering teams that will raise money for the Pure Water for the World project by walking or running a two mile trail around the park. There will be games, entertainment, and lots of fun to be had by all! So come and bring the family. Educate your children about how fortunate we are to have some of the best drinking water in the world, right here. Help them experience the satisfaction of helping their peers.
