Gift of Life Recipient Visits Glens Falls Rotary

GIFT OF LIFE
Rosemond Roberson, better known as MICHAEL
MOISE, was born 7/2/07 and before he was a month
old, his mother and brother drowned in a flooded river.
His father must have felt overwhelmed and incapable
of caring for an infant so he brought him to a neighbor
whose children looked well fed. However, the wife did
not want another child so they brought him to H.I.S.
Home for Children in Port-au-Prince run by Hal and
Chris Nungester. He has been there ever since and
although they knew of the cranial deformity, there was
not anyone to fix it in Haiti. I contacted Chris last
March about coming down to visit and see how I could
get involved. She told me about Michael Moise then so
started making calls. I bought our plane tickets for
July 18th and the next day I heard back from the
surgeon, Dr. Waldman asking me to meet with him.
Shortly after I met up with Tom Haley in Susan Kay Walter, Michael and Richard Hodge in Glens Falls
Balfour's office and he mentioned the Gift of Life. I
prayed and watched the doors open up wide for this
little person to come. The last hurdle was getting him
out of Haiti. First he got very ill for a month, then they
couldn't find his father to sign for the medical passport
and visa, after they did find him then there were
delays because of the not having a death certificate for
the mother! In the end he arrived a week after I
returned to the states with a team from Hudson, NY.
The surgery was done September 10th and we spent 4
days in the PICU at Albany Medical Center. He had a
couple blood transfusions, as expected, and recovered
so well he came home a day earlier than planned. The
swelling is down in his head and even with the bony
lumps showing he looks a good deal more handsome
than before. Now there is no chance of brain damage
as he has plenty of room to grow and he will not have
to live a lifetime with a terrible deformity. He is a joy to
us and we thank you for doing this fine work for
Michael Moise and others like him. Moise is French for
Moses, as he was "drawn from the water".
